Sea Shells

We are all like seashells…

all shapes & sizes.

Some perfect

But others…

petite.small.medium.large.super-sized.

white.black.orange.spotted..striped?

broken.chipped.cracked.

weathered.aged.tumbled.

covered & bogged down

or consumed by something bigger…

attempting to get into a different shell.

Yet, together-

with broken glass recycled into jewels,

we compose the sands of the earth.

Each of us- perfect or broken,

is a creation …

… is beautiful…

… is treasure

Which one are you?

The Knot- Part One

The Knot- Part One

Have you ever had one of those really tangled, knotted fine stranded necklaces? The knot that looks way too challenging to ever untangle? A thing of beauty locked up in a box- no idea how the knots even formed! I had one this morning- on the morning of my 35th birthday. I had not been wearing this beautiful new diamond necklace that my “boys” bought me for Christmas- appropriately entitled “the journey”- and was just ignoring the problem. Every time I looked at the box where it was- I cringed to think about the knots that had formed in its fine links of white gold, though I longed to have its beauty around my neck.

Then, today- I was determined. Though I didn’t know where to start- I began to untangle the necklace, finely holding one end while I delicately slid the other end through, time and time again to get to the core of the know and at last- freedom. The knots seemed to multiply; as I released one, there was another. Through these minutes of this seemingly impossible task, I realized it was such a metaphor for life when it sometimes seems too much too handle. The chains of mundane life that we get all wrapped up in are frivolous and fleeting compared to the eternity that God has promised through His son, Jesus! Yet how often do we keep the knots and hide the beauty? The untangling process of these precious stones began to untangle some thoughts on life in my mind and with God.

How did life become such a mess? I didn’t even see it coming? I really want to soak in your beauty, Lord and be the light that you have called me to be. Where do I start to untangle the mess when life seems so challenging? “YOU JUST START,” He spoke to me. As the knots of the necklace untangled, so did the thoughts relating to HIM. It is a tangled journey. There will be more knots along the way. Sometimes, they are easier removed than others. Practice patience. Occasionally, you move backwards a step and create more knots. Challenges are ahead. Keep going. There are even miracles along the way- like when you thought there were so many steps ahead, and the chain fell freely almost magically and came alive with its sparkle and shine once again! Hallelujah! The object of beauty is revealed- and it shines like nothing on this Earth- it is HIM!

The destination is worth the challenges- but when will we learn to keep the precious stones in a special, separate box where they will get the focus they deserve rather than getting caught up in knots- or better yet, when will we learn- starting with me- to proudly display HIS precious gems every day and leave them out of the box for the world to see?
